Childcare supplement

From the winter semester 2022/2023 onwards, students with children will receive an additional childcare supplement of 160.00 € per month for each child who has not yet reached the age of 14 on application. The supplement is only granted to one parent; if both parents are eligible for BAföG support and if they live in the same household, they decide among themselves who receives the supplement. The BAföG childcare supplement is, as far as other social benefits are concerned, exempt from imputation and a full grant is paid.

Presentation of the certificate of achievement

If you are unable to submit the certificate of achievement required according to section 48 paragraph 1 Federal Training Assistance Act (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz, BAföG) at the end of the 4th semester, you should apply to be able to submit it at a later date.

If, however, you submit the certificate of achievement at the regular time - i.e. at the end of the 4th semester - you cannot claim any delays in your studies within the first 4 semesters at the end of your maximum period of support.

Extension of the educational support

Furthermore, the Federal Training Assistance Act allows an extension of the educational support due to pregnancy or child-raising periods.
Pregnancy and child-rearing can be supported beyond the maximum period of support (standard period of study).

If the delay in education is caused by pregnancy or the care and upbringing of a child of up to fourteen years of age, educational support may be granted beyond the maximum period of support for a reasonable and longer period of time.

Within the scope of section 15 paragraph 3 number 5 Federal Training Assistance Act, the following periods are appropriate:

  • Pregnancy: 1 semester,
  • up to the child's 5th birthday: 1 semester per year of life,
  • for the 6th and 7th year of the child’s life: 1 semester in total,
  • for the 8th until the 10th year of the child’s life: 1 semester in total,
  • new: for the 11th until 14th year of the child’s life: 1 semester in total.
