Childcare supplement

Students with children will receive an additional childcare supplement of €160 per month for each child under the age of 14 upon application from the winter semester 2022/2023. The supplement is only granted to one parent; if both parents are eligible for BAföG and live in the same household, they decide between themselves who receives the supplement. The BAföG childcare allowance is not offset against other social benefits and is a full allowance.

Submission of proof of academic achievement

If you are unable to submit the proof of academic achievement required under § 48 Para. 1 BAföG at the end of the 4th semester, you should apply to submit it at a later date.

However, if you submit the transcript of records at the regular time - i.e. at the end of the 4th semester - you cannot claim any study delays within the first 4 semesters at the end of your maximum funding period.

Extension of educational support

BAföG also allows for an extension of educational support due to pregnancy or child-raising periods.

Pregnancy and child-raising can enable funding beyond the maximum funding period (standard period of study).

If the pregnancy or the care and upbringing of a child up to the age of fourteen is the reason for the delay in education, educational support can be granted for a reasonable period longer than the maximum funding period.

The following periods are appropriate within the framework of § 15 Para. 3 No. 5 BAföG:

  • Pregnancy: 1 semester,
  • until the child reaches the age of 5: 1 semester per year of life,
  • for the child's 6th and 7th year of life: 1 semester in total,
  • for the child's 8th to 10th year of life: 1 semester in total,
  • new: for the child's 11th to 14th year of life: 1 semester in total.
